Angmering Bypass work starts at last
Work starts this week on the £5.8 million Angmering bypass which will run between Water Lane near the A27 Patching interchange and the A259 at Roundstone. Construction was due to start last July but foot-and-mouth restrictions hampered the archaeological study and ground check which have now been completed. Hedges and trees are being cleared before bird-nesting begins and construction begins in April. Completion date is set for July 2003. Local residents are very upset about the number of trees being cut down.

Are you for or against pigeons?
Worthing Borough Council has been asked to look for ways to control pigeons without killing them. The council has now got rid of its culling policy and is looking at alternative methods. This includes trying to stop people from feeding the pigeons in public areas, such as Liverpool Gardens or Beach House Park, and setting up artificial nesting sites where eggs can be removed. Worthing gets fewer than 30 complaints a year about pigeons compared to 675 for rats and mice.
In Goring there are a lot of pigeons, noted for their noisy ritual dances in the mating season.

Goring man punched unconscious
A householder in Durrington Gardens, Maybridge went out to ask some youths to be a little bit quieter as they had woken his two-year-old son. For his pains he was punched and kicked and spent two days in Worthing Hospital. Anyone with information on the attackers should ring 0845-6070999.

Brooklands boating lake turns green
A leak from industrial estate sewers could be to blame for turning Brooklands boating lake bright green. Fire officers initially blamed a plastic container floating on the surface and wore protective clothing and breathing apparatus to recover the drum. But tests by the Environment Agency revealed the lake was being contaminated by another, unknown source. The birds do not seem to be affected, but everyone should keep clear until the water has been cleaned up.

Colin Hayden Smith of Ryecroft Gardens, Goring who is a keen fisherman watches the tides closely. High Tides Expected 31st Jan
The high tide at 1pm on Thusday 31 Jan will be 6.5m. If there is a Force 8 gale from the southwest as well, watch out! But it will be even more exciting in the period 5-10 October when the highest tide will be 7m.

Elaborate plans for Worthing
Posssible sale of the Hill Barn and Brooklands golf courses, sale of one of the three entertainment centres - Pavilion, Connaught or Assembly Hall, and then use the money from that, and from the developers at West Durrington, to pay for new swimming pools at the Aquarena, and at the Durrington Leisure Centre. These are the plans being discussed by Worthing Borough Council.

Keep an eye open for oily birds
There is patch of oil in the sea off Brighton. But gulls, razorbills, and guillemots covered with oil are being washed up on the beach at Goring. Have a care; they have sharp beaks. Better to ring WADARS to rescue them on 01903-217788.

Goring Website on Radio
John Radford's fortnightly Internet slot on Southern Counties Radio gave a very fulsome plug to the Goring website. John seemed to be most impressed. As indeed we hope you all are too! The publicity attracted over 500 more visitors in the days that followed the broadcast.
Sites for the program are selected by Jennifer Muller of www.itdesigners.com who also runs the Ferring website Thanks to both John and Jennifer.

Guard Owls to scare off Gulls
Southern Water in Durrington have turned to the "guard owls" in a bid to scare seagulls from the roof of their four-storey office block. They hope a pair of plastic owls will protect them from being dive-bombed. In recent years, nesting gulls have become a low-flying hazard as they swoop on anyone they feel poses a threat to their chicks. No one has been hurt but the birds have caused alarm and distress.

Routine Ilex Tree Maintenance
The contractors are back in the Ilex Avenue with some final work on this years maintenance schedule. They seem to be doing a good job.

Fox on the Beach
Normally the foxes will be down on the beach at low tide very early in the morning. Apparently they like cuttlefish. On Wednesday 16 Jan there was one there at 8.30am, not at all worried by the local dogs who got quite excited.
Foxes are actually getting to be quite a problem. Local people who have them regularly in their gardens feel it is getting to be something that somebody ought to do something about.

Forums and Democracy
Besides the normal general and local elections, the fashion now is have community involvement in everything. We have had public meetings on things like West Durrington. Now we have coming up:
- presentations on the South Downs National Park (12.30-7.30 Worthing Town Hall 17th Jan),
- Local Agenda 21 for sustainable development,
- Goring Community Forum (date to be fixed),
- Worthing Local Strategic Partnership (local group reps invited 29 Jan).
I hope someone is listening to what we say.

Crane over Ferring
Do not panic. They are not building a block of flats. The crane is actually way beyond Ferring in the Kingston Gorse and is working on the new palatial residence on the sea front. Replacing an existing large house, the new one will have basement gym, garage for three Bentleys, and many rooms.

New electronic car park signs
Worthing is to spend £150,000 on electronic car park signs. It will be the first town in West Sussex to have 12 illuminated panels at the four multi-storey car parks in town, which will say if car parks have vacant spaces. The signs will be put up at the end of January and should be in operation by March.

Bank a euro and pay £2.50
Thousands of small businesses in Sussex face crippling bank charges for accepting the euro. Most major banks, including NatWest, Barclays, HSBC and the Co-operative Bank, are charging traders to bank the euro into a sterling account. Only larger businesses which can afford a separate euro account will be exempt from the fees.
To cover this fee most stores are giving a very low exchange rate, sometimes as low as 1.51 Euros/pound when the proper rate is about 1.62.

House Prices increase
House prices in Worthing are rising faster than in Brighton and Hove, showing the gap is closing between the two seaside resorts. According to a survey by the Nationwide building society, Brighton prices are rising by 24.9 per cent while in Worthing the increase is 25.6 per cent. The average price of a house in Brighton is now £165, 508, in Worthing £133,409. Estate agents in Worthing have noticed a surge of interest in the past year, especially from first time buyers and people pushed out of the city by exorbitant house prices.

Bathing water gets clean bill of health
Worthing's seawater has been given the thumbs up for 7 consecutive years. This year, seawater in Worthing was classed as of "excellent" quality in 12 out of 20 samples taken between May and September and as "good" in the remaining eight. The improvement from 1994 coincided with Southern Water Services commissioning a 4.5km sea waste water outfall in East Worthing. Additional works are planned by Southern Water to install secondary treatment facilities to further enhance seawater quality at Worthing.
Samples are taken at The Plantation in Goring as well as other points, and are also plotted on a chart at the Sea Lane Cafe..

Now, after months of work, doctors are happy Milan's eye is performing well and are confident she will have no further problems.

Queen's Golden Jubilee Picnic
Sussex could be the site for a record-breaking picnic as part of the celebrations for the Queen's Golden Jubilee next year. A series of picnics will be held throughout the South East to promote local dishes and produce which will culminate in a picnic festival at the South of England Showground in Ardingly on Sunday August 18. It is hoped the event will be the biggest picnic held in Britain.
Communities from Sussex, Surrey, Kent, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and Berkshire will take part and in the run-up to the August finale, showcase their produce at picnics throughout May, June and July. The individual events will be judged for taste, quality, presentation and the use of the Jubilee theme, with cash prizes for the winner in each county. Local communities are being invited to complete an application form outlining how the prize money would be used to benefit their community. Ring 01444 892700 for an entry form.
