Boxing Day Charity Swim
A number of fool-hardy souls braved the Force-5 wind chill at Splash Point Worthing, in aid of Worthing Hospital Children's Centre. The water by contrast was described as being just very cold (10 degrees C). The picture of Dr John Bull shows it all - funny hat, a large damp towel, and goose-pimples.

Dog cut off by the sea
Distressed dog owners called for help after their pet got stuck on a sandbank. The couple had been walking on West Beach, Littlehampton, when the dog became stranded. Littlehampton inshore lifeboat was launched and the rescue team pulled the dog to safety. An odd story. I have difficulty keeping my dog OUT of the sea.

A seagull impailed itself on a television aerial sparking a birdanitarian rescue mission. A team of six firefighters, supported by RSPCA animal welfare officers, spent more than half an hour on Christmas Day releasing the stricken bird. It had landed on the aerial at an awkward angle, impailing its wing on top of a house in Alinora Crescent in Goring, Worthing. Firefighters reached the bird from an elevating platform and braved vicious pecking to untangle its wing.

Councillor Livermore will take over from Valerie Sutton in the spring, subject to full council approval, which is expected to be a formality. But the Lib Dems are displeased because they had put foward councillor Eric Mardell for the civic post. Gypos came and went
10 travellers caravans have appeared in the car park at the Leisure Centre this week. Then they moved on again. Where did they disappear to? I don't really want to know as long it is NIMBY.

Watch the sun set from Goring Beach

A gang of "modern day Scrooges" in Durrington left Santa Claus shaken and very annoyed on Friday, after they attempted to steal his hat. Watch out for starving hedgehogs
Hedgehogs are dying in alarming numbers because of public ignorance, according to Sussex wildlife experts. Anyone who spots a hedgehog during daylight hours is urged to call a vet or wildlife rescue helpline. County rescue co-ordinator Trevor Weeks said: "By the end of October, hedgehogs should weigh more than 600 grammes to survive hibernation but there are a lot out there that are not heavy enough. If a hedgehog comes out during the day, something is wrong with it. If anyone sees one of the animals at night, weigh it, and if it is less than 600 grammes contact us straight away. Do not put them in boxes or leave them outside in the freezing cold. We have also had people feeding them bread and milk. Under no circumstances should this be done as it can kill young hedgehogs."

  • The backseat passenger said "right, no left, no right"
  • The driver fell asleep
  • If the earth didn't move for her, the car certainly did

Meteorite dazzles onlookers (update)
People out late on the beach on Saturday 1st December saw what they thought was a bright meteorite which made an unearthly rumbling noise as it flashed across the sky. Alan Pickup, a satellite decay expert who works at the United Kingdom's Astronomy Technology Centre at the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh, explains: "The rocket, a Proton or 'SL-12', was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakstan at 18:04 UT on Dec. 1st. An 800 kg metal casing from the fourth stage of the rocket was on its third orbit around Earth when it burned up in the atmosphere over southern England and France at about 22:35 UT." The research in finding this information (about the meteor) was done by Neil Clark, who saw the fire in the sky while giving his dog a late night walk along the Goring beach. His website is www.the-clarknet.com/ which if you love dogs is well worth a visit.
I may add that BBC went along with the meteorite story. Nice that the Goring website did a better job than the professionals.

A Bin Laden cage perhaps

As expected the park boundary extends down to include Highdown, the land west of Titnopre Lane, and the fields to the A259. If you have not seen this, perhaps at the library, I have copies here, ring 01903-248782.

The Badtrans Virus hits Goring computers
The Badtrans computer virus has caused a lot of damage to local computers. We have warned of the need for you to install anti-virus software before. It seems many of my friends have not been listening or have not updated it at least once each week.
If you are using Outlook Express you should never have the messages come up on your display immediately - just show the heading line, and then you can delete anything without a proper title, or which has a To or From address which is nonsense. Warnes Hotel public inquiry
Plans to transform a 14-year-old seafront eyesore site in Worthing went under the spotlight for two days at a public inquiry. The inquiry was ordered after council planners rejected a Worthing firm Roffey Homes' bid to build a block of 72 luxury flats on the site. Critics have described the plans for an art deco-style building on the old Warnes Hotel site as "monstrous". Developers have also angered many by refusing to contribute to affordable social housing elsewhere in the borough.

An 18-year-old man was arrested at the scene and was today helping police with their inquiries.

West Durrington deadline extended
You still have time to register your comments and objections to the development at West Durrington. There are three aspects to this: the business park at the A27 junction, the widening of Titnore Lane to allow more traffic, but also permitting higher speeds, and the 800 houses planned for a new road called The Avenue running from Titnore Lane eastwards. Richard Waller wearing, his Goring Gap Preservation Trust hat, was on Southern Counties Radio this morning (Thursday 15 Nov) to say that there were major objections to all three of these proposals.

Do you take your parrot for walks?
We see a lot of dogs going walkies. Quite a lot of horses too. Even a fox in the days of Eric Fossleitner, the Fox Man of Goring. But to see three parrots of different types, with their brilliant plummage being taken for a walk along the sea wall is quite unusual. Of course it had to be a walk when I had not got my camera.
