Sussex on Rich List
Booming house prices and low unemployment have combined to land Sussex a spot in Europe's Top 20 rich list. East and West Sussex, together with Surrey, has been ranked as one of the wealthiest areas in the European Union, research published today shows. The region comes 14th out of 200 areas across the Continent, topped in the UK only by London and the M4 belt of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. Economic analysts Business Strategies measured wealth for each area by calculating how much each adult contributes to the national economy. Despite its high placing, analysts believe Sussex will struggle to hold on as savings and jobs are hit by a slowing property market and the downturn in the technology and aerospace sectors.

Yob culture in central Worthing
It is getting to be quite nasty in the late evening in Worthing. The many pubs seem to stay open most of the night. The graffiti gets worse. A car was torched in the Guildbourne Centre carpark. A police car got burnt. There is a lot shouting and threatening behaviour. Normally in this website we try and highlight the good news, but they, whoever they are, should do something about this problem.
Safe to swim at Goring
All the beaches in Sussex meet the EC's Bathing Water Directive which means they are safe to swim and play in. Thirteen beaches reached the European Commission higher standards, two more than last year, which means they can apply for the Blue Flag award.

Buy-Your-Own sandbags
People living and working in flood risk areas have been warned it is their responsibility to stock up with sandbags. West Sussex County Council's emergency planning department has made it clear people must take action to protect themselves this winter. Mr Williams said: "Many people believe that in a period of likely flooding the local authority will make sandbags available to everyone, and this would clearly be impossible".
It has been remarkably dry so far this winter. Don't rely on this continuing into the New Year!

Water flow measurement in Sea Lane, Goring
Measuring the flow in the surface water drains leading down to the sea in Sea Lane Goring is now being done with a new doppler-effect sensor installed at the bottom of one of the manholes. I knew you would be fascinated by this news!
Tree work in Ilex Avenue
Contactors have now almost completed routine tree management of the Ilex Avenue, cutting back branches that were in danger of breaking, and clearing dead wood and scrub.
Local house gets Home Front makeover
A house in Stanley Road, Worthing near the railway station, had a makeover from TV's Laurence Llewellyn Bowen with his comrade Diarmuid Gavin. Margaret and Adam Pescotts and their house appeared on BBC2's Home Front on Wednesday 31 Oct, when the full story of the transformation of their home was revealed. In the event, Margaret seemed quite pleased, particularly with the traditional style garden, but Adam seemed to be reserving his judgement.

Sussex Villages of the Year
Ashington, near Storrington, and Newick, near Lewes, have been named the Sussex Villages of the Year. The two winners of the competition, run by the Sussex Rural Community Council, will go forward to the Village of the Year for England and Wales Competition. It was felt that Ashington should go forward as a model for enhancement to an area where there has been vast development. "New houses blend well with existing buildings and social housing has been included." The judges were impressed with activities provided for children and young people, neighbourhood watch and the care schemes for older people.
This is the village, you will remember, where a developer used sub-standard cement on a clutch of houses and they had to be withdrawn and refurbished.

Tropical fruits grow in Goring
This has been the warmest October since records began in 1649. Lawns are still being cut, and the current rate this will be a useful task after Christams lunch. A fine crop of figs has been growing over the pavement in Ashurst Drive, as good as in the famous fig garden at Tarring. And lemons have been growing this year in Canterbury Road. On a more local scale there have been fine crops of pears and apples.

Girl wins cancer battle
Yasmin Friend (5) who lives with her parents in Juno Close, Goring was diagnosed with leukaemia when she was just 12 weeks old. Now after four stiff courses of chemotheropy they are confident that she is clear. Good news after a long tough battle for one so young.

Seagulls menace in Rustington
Eggs could be smothered with oil to cull noisy herring gulls which are plaguing Rustington residents, ripping open rubbish sacks and dive-bombing passers-by. The proposal being seriously considered is to smother the birds' eggs with paraffin oil. This blocks the pores so embryos inside cannot develop. The parent gulls would then sit on the eggs indefinitely, unaware they were not going to hatch. The method is intended to control the gull population and stop the aggressive behaviour of birds protecting their young. RSPB says this is illegal.

Jan 1st is Euro Day
12 countries across Europe will expect you to use Euros when travelling abroad from 1st January. The Euro is like any other currency except that the 12 counties (but not the UK) all use it and you do not have change your currency when you cross borders. People from these countries will expect to use Euros in the UK and will be able to do so at certain stores including branches of Dixons, Virgin Records, Selfridges and Marks & Spencer. If you take Euros you can swop them for Sterling at your bank. If you have any foreign currency you can exchange it for Euros or Sterling for a month or two.

£9 million improvements to A27
A £9 million package to ease traffic congestion on the A27 in Worthing and Lancing has been unveiled. Transport Minister David Jamieson said the measures could be introduced quickly, and he hoped a series of schemes for the stretch of trunk road would bring real benefits. The measures are all short-term and will be carried out in advance of a major study into the future of the road network, known as the South Coast Modal Study.
£9 million does not seem to go very far these days, and we fear the changes will be cosmetic rather than a major breakthrough.

Flats at The Strand at Ferring
Not immediately in our parish, but a favourite place to go for Goring residents, Ferring locals, and day visitors. Now the character of the area is threatened with change for ever. The proposal is for two three storey blocks for a total of 30 flats, with car parks and garages. There are probably a dozen reasons for opposing this one. A public meeting on Monday 29 October at Ferring village hall to discuss the plans was packed with objectors to the scheme.
Goring man killed in A24 Crash
Mathew Vern of Chancton Close Goring was killed when his car crossed the carriageway just north of the Washington roundabout on the A24 and hit a Mercedes taxi. The driver of the taxi was taken to hospital, his passenger was not injured. The accident happened about 7am and caused a five mile queue.
This part of the A24 is certainly a blackspot, with hold-ups morning and evening, and most people going too fast. There is going to be a substantial central barrier soon.

Radio Mast in the Goring Gap
Another mast is threatened. This time at the Southern Water pumping station in the middle of the Goring Gap. We do not think this is a good idea. It would stick up high above the existing building. We don't even like the existing building, but as a pumphouse it serves a useful function, has been there a long time, and is on the site of an old sea barn when the area was part of the Goring Hall park.
Patching / Clapham village map
Our neighbours to the North in Patching and Clapham now have their millenium village map avaiulable cost £5 from Sonia Jacob 01903-871281. All the Sussex village maps will be on show at Worthing Museum and Art Gallery for two months starting on 24th November.

Elephant in Brighton street plan
Modern technology has confirmed Brighton and Hove is home to the biggest white elephant in the world. Artist Jeremy Wood and computer expert Hugh Pryor made the discovery while trying out a bizarre new drawing technique which combines pioneering satellite science with a love for join-the-dot puzzles. The eight-mile landmark's trunk touches The Lanes and its tail lashes Denmark Villas in Hove.

The wasp spider returns
A spectacular species of spider is flourishing in Sussex.
Examples of the wasp spider, which is 2.5cm long and has striking black and yellow markings, are turning up in areas of long grass in this area. Residents were worried the spider's fearsome appearance meant it might be poisonous. In fact, the species is native to England, though rarely seen until now.

Chipmunks go walkabout
An advert in the Worthing Herald last week asked for news of six chipmunks that have gone walkabout from Durrington. Please look in your garage, your shed, your greenhouse and check they are not visiting with you.
There are about a dozen breeds of chipmunk. The photo here is a Gary Collared Chipmunk, which may not be one of the ones that is lost.

Choppers at Dawn
The big (and noisy) coastguard helicopter was out at dawn on Saturday searching the beach from Worthing to Goring and then just above the trees up the plantation and back. We don't know what they were looking for but we don't think they found it. We also hear there were a lot of police cars around Worthing pier.

Cleaner Sea Water at Ford
Opening of the new water treatment plant at Ford means that the water discharged from the 3-mile outflow will be cleaner, and that must be good news for places like Goring further up the coast. Not that we have been complaining; the water is usually very clear and there are a lot of small fish. Next big clean event? the new treatment plant at East Worthing.

More storms and heavy rain
Gusts of up to Force 12, reaching speeds of 70mph, were recorded in some areas. Several of the beach huts at Goring have damage to the roofs. One which had been newly clad with plastic had the complete side ripped off again.
Sea Lane Cafe has a flooding problem in the downstairs store rooms and toilets, this is now being fixed.
Two poplar trees at the south side of the Fernhurst Drive sportsfield were snapped off.

Worthing Seafront Refurbishment soon
We hope to see a start on the refurbishment of the Worthing seafront in time for the next summer season. Plans include 18 palm-like cordylines, which will have 12ft high trunks, with foliage on top making them even taller. They will be planted in promenade flower beds, stretching from Splash Point to Western Place. There will also be nine large 6ft high palms in giant pots in the vicinity of the Denton Lounge and the Lido. The cost of the planting, which also includes oak hedging, will be £37,000. The total cost of the revamp of Worthing seafront will be £150,000 and this has now been approved.

Virus hits computer users
The latest of many computer viruses will hit anyone who uses Email or surfs the Internet. If you do not have anti-virus software then you must get it installed immediately. You have been warned. The software is excellent, not expensive, and may save you a big clean up bill.
Poetic Justice for Bin Man
We have been complaining about the driver of the lorry emptying litter bins driving on the greensward along Marine Drive. Yesterday morning (Thursday 20 Sept) he tried to do it again, misjudged the turn and hit the gate post. There is severe damage to the hydraulic hoist and it it is costing the contractor a lot of money to repair it. Worthing Direct are not pleased with him.
Orange Phone Aerial planned for Sea Place
Unless we can stop it there will be a 6 metre high aerial pole right outside St Laurence's Church in Sea Place. One: they did not give us any warning. And two: if they must have an aerial could it perhaps be sited down near the yacht club in among all the other masts, and not right in front of a locally important building.
WBC voted against this project and the three others round the borough, but we fear this may not be the end of the matter.

Neighbourhood Watch Volunteers wanted
Over 100 volunteers have been signed up who can be called on to search for missing people. This ist has been set up in the wake of the death of Sarah Payne. Latin Names for a Fishy Business
The EU is attempting to simplify fish trading by using a common language. They want the Latin names to be used everywhere. Mr Tocock, of Sea Breeze fish shop in the Mulberry, decided to have a bit of fun and test the theory out. People were stopping to look and scratching their heads. A few did know it was Latin some thought it was a new species of fish. I had to translate Latin into English for some customers it just shows how silly some ideas are.

A good year for Sunflowers
Eric Collier, 76, of Melbourne Road, Goring, watched his prize sunflower get bigger and bigger until it reached the dizzy heights of 12ft 2in and it s still growing!
And little Kendra Bowen also planted a sunflower which just grew and grew to 12ft. Proud mum Linda said: "It got to her height and suddenly shot up! She must have green fingers because she won a magic bean contest at school".

Survey Ship off Goring
A large black hulled survey ship with bright white superstructure has been weaving up and down the coast, coming in way inside the yellow marker buoys in the jet-ski area. It is probably a routine check on water samples by the Department for the Environment. Anyone got other ideas?
