Houses of Interest

Sea front house at Eirene Road Sea front house at West Parade
Every seaside town should have one of these. Built in the modern style with a nautical image with splendid views from the 'bridge' out over the sea. One such house is enough though. Our example is a good one. Not actually in Goring, just a few yards to the East in West Worthing.

The style is sometimes called Art Deco. Or sometimes International Modern. It was popular about 1928, originated at the Bauhaus school in Germany, and taken up in other countries, not least by Le Corbusier in France.

It is recognised by flat roofs, white stucco finish, metal Crittal windows which are sometimes curved, and inside the wall could be finished in wood veneer.

Ditto at East Preston

Looking like the bridge of an ocean liner, with views out to sea from the upstairs rooms, and the garden sheltered from the wind and prying eyes by a substantial hedge.

Sea Lane House, Ferring

Pevsner is full of praise for this one at East Preston. Designed by F R S Yourke and Marcel Brewer who both became very famous. White paint, t-shaped, with the longer stem towards the sea on pillars. The living rooms all have a splendid view.

Shaftesbury Avenue / Robson Road

Two small groups of houses at the junction of Shaftesbury Avenue, Goring Road, and at Robson Road. They are both designated as conservation areas.

Modern-style house - Sea Lane

Modern-style house - Sea Lane

In the early 1930's a large number of up-market, speculative, white-rendered houses were built following the same idea. This one shows the typical features: white rendered, rounded windows, some flat roof, art deco door, and inside there will be wood-veneer paneling and doors. There is some detailing at the roof line.

This style is used for detached and semi-detached houses and tend to have generous accommodation.

A typical, rather dull Goring house

The normal Goring House

Lets face it, most of the houses in Goring are fairly small, one or two stories, front and back garden carefully tended, with garage and one or two cars. And a dog.

House in Marine Drive

There are some larger houses, some of which are excellent. This one on Marine Drive has a a coach house, local stone roof, ornate chimneys, and a beautiful garden behind the high hedge.

Casa Del Mar, Marine Drive

The house right next to the Plantation in Marine Drive was used for filming a Dr Who episode, Silver Nemisis. It was chosen to give a South American feel to the sequence..

Beach House, Sea Lane

With a date plaque saying '1887 Jubilee' this is the earliest house that still survives in Sea Lane, Goring. The cottages that stood on the east side of the road near the Mulberry have long since been pulled down in the name of progress. The tree that blooms every Easter is a Judas Tree.
Beach House is now a doctors surgery.

The Pump House in Sea Lane

When is a house not a house

When it is a pumphouse, just next door to Beach House in Sea Lane. It used to be worked by steam, thus the substantial chimney, but is now electric. Waste water used to go out to sea, but in the name of ecology it now goes to the water treatment plant at East Worthing.

Thatched Cottage, Goring Lane

Thatched Cottage, Goring Lane

No history about this one, just opposite Aldsworth Parade and next to Steel's Garage. But it does have a thatched roof, and there are not a lot of them in Goring.
