The Choir of the Black Sea Don Cossacks – 1 Aug 2003

On Friday last we joined about a hundred others so see and hear an amazing performance given by a group of seven members of this choir. The harmony and projection of their voices was superb and they filled the Church with sounds probably never heard before in the Parish of St Mary. Each member was an accomplished soloist and the bass voices sent tingles down the spine. The first half was of Religious music and the second Russian Folk music. Apparently we were chosen as a trial venue prior to a further visit to the Country next year There was no doubt as to the audience reaction – two standing ovations proved their popularity and the Choir still had to beg to leave even after their two encores! It was an exhausting but wonderful experience. I sincerely hope we shall see them again.

Rainbow Theatre – 26 July 2003

Last Sunday was the final performance of the second Shakespeare plays held in Highdown Gardens. The first was Twelfth Night followed by the Merry Wives of Windsor.
We had booked for the Saturday performance and as we were driving there with our friends and a picnic rain started to spatter on the windscreen. By seven o’clock it was coming down heavily but still the people were coming in. The Producer, Nick Young, was pacing up and down and members of the cast were chatting with members of the audience as to the prognosis. It is a long time since I have been out in such heavy rain and eventually Nick decided to abandon the performance.
The first one in the two performances, So we went again on the Sunday and were blessed with fair weather. Both performances were captivating, even to those who are not ardent Shakespeare fans. The members of the cast performed with confidence and enthusiasm which passed on to the audience. Two most enjoyable events in a lovely setting. We look forward to next year.

Goring New Life Baptist Church was the venue for the celebration of two significant Anniversaries on the 20th July. Two members of the Church, John and Cissie Nicholson had completed sixty years of marriage and the Minister, The Rev. Nigel O’Dwyer and his wife Caroline had reached their thirtieth Anniversary. They were able to recall their weddings when they cut a special Anniversary cake with all four names on it. Two huge bouquets were presented to them. A team of ladies worked hard to provide a lavish tea for the couples and their friends and relatives and Church members.
