The chairman reported four major successes during the year.
1). placing the four interpretation boards unveiled by the Mayor, one on the sea front in the Goring Gap, and three spaced along the Ilex Avenue. These have been well received and are much appreciated by residents and visitors. The AGM part of the programme was followed by a talk with colour-slides on Highdown Gardens by Chris Bradley, Head of Parks at Worthing Borough Council. With detailed history of the house and the Stern family, he also described how the gardens are currently well maintained, and the gardeners will this year handle 115,428 summer bedding plants while the 2004 spring extravaganza will consist of 163,611 blooms, including 52,945 tulips, 40,000 daffodils and 10,000 crocuses. This is for the whole of Worthing, but Highdown is the flagship. The Group will be holding an Evening Barbecue at 6pm on Saturday 9 August at 30 Sea Lane Ferring, in conjunction with the Ferring Conservation Group. This will build on the success of the 2002 Barbecue which was most siccessful on a beautiful evening. |

Following the AGM, the meeting saw a wealth of early films of Sussex presented by Alan Readman of the County Records Office. The earliest films were made at one of the worlds centres of film production at Shoreham, and used a fixed camera, black and white of course, and lasting only a minute before the film ran out. This contrasts with the high resolution, accurate colour presentations we have today, but which now have fades, smears, snap-cuts, action pauses and all the other gimmicks to prevent you from enjoying the story. |

Lock the doors and close the windows when you are out, even when just out in the garden. Lock the side gate and do not allow access to the rear of your house where most break-ins occur. Do not try and apprehend the villain, he is most likely high on drugs and will not hesitate to knife you; just get a good description and tell him to go. Do not allow unexpected callers into the house, however good their reasons. Get a neighbour to check your house when you are away and collect letters and newspapers that are in view from the outside. All this has been said many times, but is worth repeating again. Martin had mixed feelings about the requirement for all public servants to fill in mountains of paperwork after taking any sort of action. All the professions have the same complaint. In order to provide statistics, and to protect the civil liberties of individuals you have to fill in forms and there is no initiative or time to actually do your job. Martin was actively involved in the Tichfield murder in 1996. A body turned up by a plough was finally identified when pictures of the head, reconstructed from the skull, were shown by Nick Ross and Jill Dando on Crimewatch. Callers during the show suggested the name of the Asian victim and pointed towards two possible suspects which were then taken to court with blood and finger print evidence. Apparently it was the mother of his child and her new husband wot dun it! Before the main speaker, county and borough councillor Steve Waight answered questions from the residents covering news of the sea wall cycle path (a report due in 2005), grass cutting (not often enough), parking on the verge (a difficult one), graffiti (recently looking better), and the poor road surface in Goring Road (soon). These question and answer sessions are a valuable outlet, for complaint and for praise, and serve as a community forum for Goring residents. |

The Mayor and Mayoress attended the opening night and met the cast and
producer, Joe Daniels and from then it went from strength to strength. The members of the cast played their parts with skill and enthusiasm and, of course, the audience was fully involved.
It is always difficult to pick out individual members but I will try! David Burt and Suzanne Gurr set the scene as the Ogre and Good Fairy (guess who was which). Malcolm Chilton, who is becoming an expert at playing the Dame so
successfully, played his part to the full and wore some magnificent clothes and wigs!
Gary Congdon, who played the King, really got the support of the audience as did the Princess played by Laura Watkins. The 'wicked' Duchess, Pam Chilton, played a scheming part and the Prince, Hannah Chilton, and Lady Caroline Lisa Jackson (with her funny laugh) certainly made a lovely couple! Emma Hollamby was Danny the Principal Boy and her two ineffectual brothers Jake Young and Tom Daniels really came into their own when they were joined by Michael Fairs and Chris Osbourne,
performing as a Rock Band, which certainly got the audience going! As an added bonus the former Vicar Michael Hore and his wife Rosalind joined the audience for the Friday performance. It was good to see them again. Book early for next years pantomime! |
