Palatine School Gardens Open Day - 8 June 2003
Palatine School Gardens were open to the public on Sunday. Over 180 people came, and over £500 made for charity. The response from the public was always the same- utter amazement and we were compared with Highdown by some! The pupils who acted as guides were a real credit to the school. New this year was the Labyrinth where visitors were encouraged to walk the 380 yard curly-whirly path to the centre where they found a seat to rest before walking back. And the new pond hut for wildlife observation and a place to sit when it rains.
The next open day is Sunday June 8 from 11-5pm

Goring C of E First School - 14 June 2003
Goring C of E First School enjoyed a superb Summers day for its Medieval Summer Fayre held at the School on Saturday the 14th June. The Medeval theme was evident throughout the event, although I felt some sympathy for those who had to wear heavy costumes in the heat of the afternoon. As well as the usual Fayre attractions there were many other games and events from bygone years such as Drench the Damsel, Smash and Crash (crockery) Skittles and Splat Ye Olde Rat. There was a Fancy Dress Competition and the maim Arena attraction was a brief return to the days of Robin Hood in which sword play and bravery was displayed in a professional display by Stunt Action Specialists sponsored by Lloyds TSB Registrars. The Falconry Display was somewhat curtailed by Seagulls. Although the Falcons are used to seagulls, at the commencement of the display there were only two in sight. I was amazed that, within minutes, the sky was filled with some thirty seagulls swooping into the arena. Whilst the Falcons are more than a match for individual gulls they were severely out numbered and were only able to make short flights. An impressive display by Huxley's Experience Falconry sponsored by NCT Supplies! The Chairman of the PTA, Neil Hall, was delighted with the event which raised some £4000 and was attended by over 700 paying adults accompanied by numerous children. He wished to record his thanks to all those who helped and supported the event.

Real Gardeners - 18 June 2003
Thought you would be interested to know that www.realgardeners.co.uk has been given the accolade of website of the month by Gardens Monthly in their July issue. Their write up tells readers - "This entertaining, informative website is made for gardeners, by gardeners, with interactive forums on many subjects including plants, vegetables and the natural world, as well as a recipe board with great ideas for your home-grown crops. The friends and foes of the animal world are identified and sections on poisonous and irritant plants provide sound advice. Stay online to browse the shopping pages, web links and more." It seems as if we are getting a lot of publicity one way and another, totally unsolicited. We were in Computer Active last year and this year we have been recommended in Gardeners World Magazine and the Guardian Newspaper as well. Gives you a nice warm feeling inside - we must be doing something right.

Hannah Chilton on Cutty Sark - 14 May 2003
The Chilton Family tradition will be continued by the youngest member Hannah when she sets off in the Sail Training Association ship 'Prince William' crossing the Baltic from Poland to Finland with a group of other young Adventurers as part of the annual Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race. The trip will last from the 20th July to the 1st August. Her brother completed a similar trip several years ago as did their Mother before them! The Sail Training Association provides valuable experience to thousands of young people each year in team working under pressure and also gives the opportunity to meet many other young people from all parts of the World.
Hannah is currently at Worthing College studying Tourism and Business Studies and hopes to go on to Birmingham to study for an Adventure Tourism Management Degree. This will suit her well as, having known her for many years, she has a passion for anything adventurous and the Tall Ships Race will be an excellent start! Hannah is currently working as a part time life guard at the Aquarena and is also assists with the children's Youth Group at St Mary's Church, Goring, as well as being very active in the Scouting Movement. To complete the Trip Hanna has to raise some £1250 in Sponsorship and she is working hard to achieve this amount. Any contributions to this worthwhile adventure would be greatly appreciated! If you wish to contact Hannah her telephone number is 01903 596573.

Ilex Conservation Group Annual Meeting - 1 May 2003
Ilex Conservation Group held their annual meeting on 1st May. The group is concerned with preserving the Ilex Avenue, the trees in Sea Lane Goring, and the Goring Gap. As such they only meet once a year as a group, but have a strong committee who meet at least quarterly to act as a pressure group, working closely with the Worthing Society, Goring Residents' Association, and the Goring Gap Preservation Trust. The Group has 268 paid-up members.

The chairman reported four major successes during the year. 1). placing the four interpretation boards unveiled by the Mayor, one on the sea front in the Goring Gap, and three spaced along the Ilex Avenue. These have been well received and are much appreciated by residents and visitors.
2). objections to the cycle path suggested along the sea wall in Goring which have resulted in our part of the project being put back for a couple of years.
3). submissions on the South Downs National Park which have resulted in extension of the park down to the A27 at Highdown, and inclusion of the Titnore Woods. Pressure is now on to extend the park towards Durrington to include Castle Goring.
4). examination in detail of the plans for housing at West Durrington, and submitting a plea that Titnore Lane should not be the prime access to the site.

The AGM part of the programme was followed by a talk with colour-slides on Highdown Gardens by Chris Bradley, Head of Parks at Worthing Borough Council. With detailed history of the house and the Stern family, he also described how the gardens are currently well maintained, and the gardeners will this year handle 115,428 summer bedding plants while the 2004 spring extravaganza will consist of 163,611 blooms, including 52,945 tulips, 40,000 daffodils and 10,000 crocuses. This is for the whole of Worthing, but Highdown is the flagship.

The Group will be holding an Evening Barbecue at 6pm on Saturday 9 August at 30 Sea Lane Ferring, in conjunction with the Ferring Conservation Group. This will build on the success of the 2002 Barbecue which was most siccessful on a beautiful evening.

Goring Residents' Association - 17 April 2003
Goring Residents' Association held its AGM on Thursday 17th April and reported an excellent year. With 1800 members the GRA is one of the largest community groups in the area, running monthly meetings through the winter months, outings in Spring and Autumn, a Theatre Group, and very successful Christmas lunches and a New Year Party. They reported successes in protecting the environment working with the local conservation groups - the protests against the proposed cycle path along the sea wall, the rally in protection of the Titnore Woods, and the detailed objections to the West Durrington plans. GRA is contactable on 01903-248782

Following the AGM, the meeting saw a wealth of early films of Sussex presented by Alan Readman of the County Records Office. The earliest films were made at one of the worlds centres of film production at Shoreham, and used a fixed camera, black and white of course, and lasting only a minute before the film ran out. This contrasts with the high resolution, accurate colour presentations we have today, but which now have fades, smears, snap-cuts, action pauses and all the other gimmicks to prevent you from enjoying the story.

Goring Residents' Association - 20 March 2003
The monthly meeting of the Goring Residents' Association on Thursday 20th March featured Martin Schucker who served as a Detective Inspector with the Hampshire Police and is now a security consultant. There was a barriage of questions about policing in general and brought forward good advice to all residents.

Lock the doors and close the windows when you are out, even when just out in the garden. Lock the side gate and do not allow access to the rear of your house where most break-ins occur. Do not try and apprehend the villain, he is most likely high on drugs and will not hesitate to knife you; just get a good description and tell him to go. Do not allow unexpected callers into the house, however good their reasons. Get a neighbour to check your house when you are away and collect letters and newspapers that are in view from the outside. All this has been said many times, but is worth repeating again.

Martin had mixed feelings about the requirement for all public servants to fill in mountains of paperwork after taking any sort of action. All the professions have the same complaint. In order to provide statistics, and to protect the civil liberties of individuals you have to fill in forms and there is no initiative or time to actually do your job.

Martin was actively involved in the Tichfield murder in 1996. A body turned up by a plough was finally identified when pictures of the head, reconstructed from the skull, were shown by Nick Ross and Jill Dando on Crimewatch. Callers during the show suggested the name of the Asian victim and pointed towards two possible suspects which were then taken to court with blood and finger print evidence. Apparently it was the mother of his child and her new husband wot dun it!

Before the main speaker, county and borough councillor Steve Waight answered questions from the residents covering news of the sea wall cycle path (a report due in 2005), grass cutting (not often enough), parking on the verge (a difficult one), graffiti (recently looking better), and the poor road surface in Goring Road (soon). These question and answer sessions are a valuable outlet, for complaint and for praise, and serve as a community forum for Goring residents.

Goring Residents' Association - 20 Feb 2003
At the meeting of the GRA on Thursday 20 February the audience was asked what they would like to make life in Goring even better. A number of hardy annuals were put forward: graffiti, uneven pavements, Inland Revenue staff parking in residential roads, cyclists on the pavement.
New topics raised included the gents loo behind the Goiring library is overdue for a refurb, the Southern Water manhole cover in the entrance to Caffyns carpark, uneven road surface in the A259 at Parklands. And concern as to what the Sealands carehome will be used for now it is sold to a mystery buyer. But generally we thought that Goring is really a good place to live.
The featured talk was by Peter Hill talking about one of his several enthusiasms, this time the island of Guernsey, with its coast path along cliffs and golden beaches, and the wealth of history of occupations and threats of invasion. The beautiful colour slides showed the masses of flowers, the sea views, and the wonderful shell church which is the one attraction that all visitors flock to see.
The next meeting is on Thursday 20 March at 7.30pm and features a talk by Roy Herridge on his 40 year experience in the police.

Real Gardeners - 2 Feb 2003
It was only two or three weeks ago that I wrote about the local Gardening website and, indeed, spoke to 'Sox' one of the founders of this increasingly popular and accessible site www.realgardeners.co.uk It is with sadness, therefore, that I have to report the death of 'Sox' which occurred on Sunday the 2nd February. He will be sadly missed and I can do no better than quote from the message I received from his wife;
'Sox, my darling husband, and co-founder of Real Gardeners died last Sunday at 2.30am. He died from a massive heart attack and I have been totally reassured that he was completely unaware of what was happening. His funeral will be held at Worthing Crematorium at 2pm on Monday 17th February. Afterwards we will celebrating his life at the home he loved, in the style that Sox would have wanted, with joy and laughter. Sox was very rarely without a smile on his face and I know he would want us to do the same if we are able.
Real Gardeners will continue in his memory and when I am able to, after the funeral, I will open a separate Forum in memory of Sox and then we will transfer every single message that has been posted about him since he died in there so that people can go in there if they wish to read again the amazing tributes, and also add to them if they feel they want to. This separate Forum will remain on RG forever'

Kestro, Worthing Stroke Club - 24 Jan 2003
Kestro celebrated its 21st Birthday with a Tea Party and Birthday Cake on the 24th January at its usual meeting place, the Goring United Reform Church. The Club was founded by Mrs Robin Bradley, who is still the Secretary, to help people who have suffered a stroke. Members take part in exercises and other physical activities every Friday afternoon with volunteer Physio's to assist in their recovery. Perhaps, most of all, they come for friendship with others who have also suffered a stroke and understand how they are feeling.
Members usually need transport for the Club. It does hire a minibus but it has to provide its own drivers. There is an urgent need for drivers and also for a volunteer physiotherapist, perhaps someone who has retired, to lead the exercise sessions. Any able to help or requiring further information is asked to contact Mrs Bradley on 01903 240908.

Chestnut Tree Appeal
Charlotte Attwood, who is aged ten, presented a cheque for £45.00 to the Appeal which she had raised on her own initiative. She made a Charity box which was decorated with Christmas lights and put it outside her home in Seafield Avenue to encourage people passing by to put in their spare change. Clearly, thanks to Charlotte and the generous passers by this worked well!

Goring Parish Players Panto Success
Every year we say it cannot get better but every year it does! This years production of Puss in Boots (a new pantomime written by Christopher Loveless) was a resounding success. With a cast of over thirty and almost as many behind the scenes, the Players put on four evening performances and a matinee and it was virtually a sell out of seats.

The Mayor and Mayoress attended the opening night and met the cast and producer, Joe Daniels and from then it went from strength to strength. The members of the cast played their parts with skill and enthusiasm and, of course, the audience was fully involved.

It is always difficult to pick out individual members but I will try! David Burt and Suzanne Gurr set the scene as the Ogre and Good Fairy (guess who was which). Malcolm Chilton, who is becoming an expert at playing the Dame so successfully, played his part to the full and wore some magnificent clothes and wigs!

Gary Congdon, who played the King, really got the support of the audience as did the Princess played by Laura Watkins. The 'wicked' Duchess, Pam Chilton, played a scheming part and the Prince, Hannah Chilton, and Lady Caroline Lisa Jackson (with her funny laugh) certainly made a lovely couple! Emma Hollamby was Danny the Principal Boy and her two ineffectual brothers Jake Young and Tom Daniels really came into their own when they were joined by Michael Fairs and Chris Osbourne, performing as a Rock Band, which certainly got the audience going!
And then there was Puss herself. Played by Linda Daniels she not only looked the part with clever make up and costume, but she also adopted a 'cat like' way of speaking which added to the excellent performance. Of course it was a team effort and the supporting cast made the whole show swing.

As an added bonus the former Vicar Michael Hore and his wife Rosalind joined the audience for the Friday performance. It was good to see them again. Book early for next years pantomime!
