Cash Crisis at St Mary's - 27 Nov 02
St Mary's Church, Goring, needs up to £200,000 to replace its roof. But the day-to-day running costs of the historic Worthing parish church are also causing concern. Parish treasurer Ray Whitcombe, writing in the latest edition of the parish magazine, stated: "We are nine months into the year and our income is already £5,462 less than our expenditure and the gap is widening."

"We have urgent work needed to the church, namely repairs to the organ chamber roof costing £5,421 and repairs to a soak-away costing £2,546. The total, to include VAT and architects' fees, as well as the overspend, is going to be about £17,000." He said there were 348 people on the Electoral Role and, of these, 128 had signed a gift aid form allowing the church to recover the tax on donations from the Government. Mr Whitcombe urged others belonging to the church to sign a form, providing further income running into thousands of pounds.

"Our biggest expense is our contribution to the Diocese. This has to cover the costs of clergy stipends, pension contributions, housing, training and all parish support costs. We are making an appeal to everyone to consider their contribution to St Mary's. The situation is serious and we would ask you all to consider an increase, no matter how small or large."

New Vicar appointed at St Mary's - 25 Nov 02
Good News for St Mary's Goring, a new Vicar has been appointed! Following the departure of the Reverend Michael Hore last May the Parish of St Mary's and St Laurence has been awaiting the appointment of its new Vicar. It was announced on Sunday that the Reverend Andrew Tremlett has been appointed although he will not be able to take up his new position until after Easter 2003. Currently Chaplain to the Bishop of Portsmouth the Reverend Tremlett comes with excellent credentials. He has served in parishes in Torquay and Fareham and was also Chaplain to St Mary Rotterdam, in the Parish of Europe, for some three years. This included working in the world's largest port with english/Dutch speaking congregations drawn fro some twenty countries. He was also involved in the Mission to Seafarers.
Andrew is married to Ali, who is a teacher and also a trainee painter and decorator, with three children Lizzie (11), Jacob (8) and Thomas (4). In announcing his appointment Jo Holgate, one of the Churchwardens, paid tribute to the three current Curates who have ensured the smooth running of the Churches since May, the Reverend Stephen Gurr, Paul Matthews and David Burt. Everyone is looking forward to Andrew and his family joining the Parish next year.

St Mary's visit to Chichester Theatre - 19 Oct 02
St Mary's Church members enjoyed a visit to Chichester Festival Theatre backstage on Saturday morning. On the conducted tour organised by Malcolm Chilton through the Theatre's Education Centre visitors were shown all aspects of the theatre from Lighting and Sound to the making of scenery and the dressing rooms. We were amazed at how little room there is for the Actors (although we were told that the accommodation was good compared to London theatres). An Actors life is clearly not all glamour!

Goring Resident's Association - 17 Oct 02
Goring Resident's Association. At Thursday's meeting of the Goring Resident's Association, Alison McCann from the Chichester County Records Office spoke on Personalities of Petworth House. The wonderful park, spectacular house, and the public events held there attract big crowds. Alison told of three of the owners. Firstly the 9th Earl of Northumberland, who spent much of his life locked up in the Tower of London, apparently in some luxury, gaining the reputation as the The Wizard Earl because of his scientific experiments in his prison cell.
And then of Charles Duke of Somerset who rebuilt the house, was patron to Grimley Gibbons, and then sent daily and very detailed instructions to his agent at Petworth, while at the same time playing politics in London, in and out of power.
And lastly the best one of the three, the Third Earl of Egremont who was a patron of Turner, many of whose pictures are on display in the house, and who set up a model farm and breeding stock which have much improved agriculture to this day.
The next meeting is on Thursday 21 November entitled 'I wish I had your job guv', by Michael Leggatt, a publisher who describes the wealth of famous people he met in his activities.

Goring Residents' Association - 19 Sept 02
Goring Residents' Association meeting at St Mary's Hall on Thursday 19 September, gave members an opportunity to grill Councillor David Marchant on many topics of popular concern. He said that he had written to the Secretary of State about the repeated incursions into Goring by travellers, and received a useful statement of the existing laws. But David was clear that the existing laws were not good enough, and asked for suggestions from the members on what could be done in addition.

On the subject of Foxes, a straw poll of the 100 members present showed about a dozen who would not like to see them come to any harm, about a dozen who hated them and certainly not in their back gardens, and the majority who were not too bothered either way. The Chairman produced an old sock filled with hair from the barbershop, which if hung up, he said ,was a way of dissuading the foxes from your patch.

Bill Gage, an archivist from WSCC Records Office showed splendid slides of the growth of railways in Sussex, and how they impacted the communities that they served. With a wealth of anecdotes and encouraging generous participation from the audience, it was an excellent evening.

The next GRA meeting is on Thursday 17 October for a talk by Tim McCann on Goodwood House.

St Laurence's Church Flower Festival - 14-17 June 02
St Laurence's Church Flower Festival which took place between the 14th and 17th June lived up to its theme of 'Celebration' in this special year. The celebrating of the Christian Faith and the journey of Faith through out the year were well depicted. The floral decorations certainly emphasised the key times of the year starting with the Queen's Golden Jubilee and passing through the celebrations of St Valentine, Mothering Sunday, Easter, the Ascension, Saint Swithun, St Laurence, through to Advent and Christmas. All the decorations picked out the seasons in a most appropriate way with a mass of colour where appropriate and, in others such as Easter, a traditional Easter garden powerfully showing an empty cross and an empty Tomb. It was a most impressive display of floral expertise and due credit must be given to all those who contributed and in particular the lady in charge Mrs M Wheeler. All proceeds are to be put towards the Organ fund.

St Mary's Church ZAPs Youth Group - 2 June 02
St Mary's Church Youth Group - the ZAPs - was one of over twenty similar Groups from all over Sussex to take part in the Diocesan Spring Camp at Plumpton Racecourse near Lewes. As well as being a Religious Festival with workshops, music games and many other attractions the Queen's Jubilee was celebrated with great enthusiasm. Almost five hundred young people and adults attended in what must hold the record of being the largest street party in the County.
The tables were set in a continuous line along the perimeter road and they must have stretched for a hundred metres. Each Group was responsible for decorating its own section and massive amounts of food were provided by gallant bands of supporting helpers who had clearly worked hard to make the weekend a success. With Groups coming from as far afield as Birdham to Bexhill there were themes of the nineteen sixties and nineteen seventies and most of the young people entered into the fun of dressing up and there were many liberal interpretations of the dress of those years. Enthusiasm was not, however, lacking!
A highlight of the weekend was the five a side football tournament. I am not a football enthusiast but excitement rose when 'our' team, comprising Michael Fairs, Jon Buckland, Peter Levett, George Lindley and Russell Constance, won a place in the final. This resulted in a three all draw at time so a penalty goal decision was necessary which the ZAP's won.
The weather was good the food was excellent and the atmosphere was lively and happy. It was good to see so many young people having a good time and behaving so well. Credit must also go the organisers and Leaders, so far as the ZAP's are concerned, the Rev Paul Matthews and his wife Zena.

Mark Braisby Memorial Trophy
Thirteen teams took part in this tenth annual tournament which took place on the 19th May at the Bull Park, Goring. Blessed with ideal weather conditions the Tournament was played in a very friendly atmosphere with Tony Stanley's "Old Timers" being the overall winners of the Trophy beating Goring First School Parent Support Association four and a half Rounders to three in a thrilling final. The Robert Sisley Plate was awarded to Goring Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic who beat Durrington Scouts in their final and "Kids Stuff" picked up the Cindy Woods Wooden Spoon.
Organisers, Paul and Karen Braisby would like to thank Goring Cricket Club for its continued support in hosting the event and The Bull Public House for providing a Bar-B-Que in their Garden which raised £103 for the Leukaemia Research Fund.
So that everyone can start training next years event will take place on Sunday the 18th May so if any Business or Club or similar organisation would like to take part please contact Paul and Karen Braisby on Worthing 529787.

Goring Parish Jubilee Party
Three hundred people came to the Goring Jubilee Party on Saturday the 18th May at St Mary's Church Hall. It was described by Jo Blackwell, the principal organiser, as a huge success. The party commenced with cream teas and a sing along led by Lisa Jackson which included a wide range of songs from yesteryear and the shows.

At five o'clock the Mayor and Mayoress Mr and Mrs Eric Mardell joined the party, one of his first engagements since his inauguration on Friday. They both stayed until 6.30 joining in the singing and the party games which followed. He commented on the splendid atmosphere of the occasion.

The games were led by Debbie Waring, entertaining a large group of youngsters. Topical games included pinning the nose on the Corgi and a Treasure Hunt to Find the Queen's Treasure. This was followed by a Disco and Bar-B-Que. The event was not only a social success but also raised funds which will be put towards the Church Renovation. Jo Blackwell said she would put on a similar function again as there was a wonderful community atmosphere which drew in people from all over the Parish.

Finally thanks should also be given to caretaker, Philip Webber, who put everything back in order in time for the Sunday School.

Ilex Conservation Group
Ilex Conservation Group reported an excellent year at their AGM. Membership is up, over 250 households have registered their support. The Ilex Avenue is looking magnificent now the scars after the recent WBC tree maintenance have grown over. The trees in Sea Lane Goring have also been tidied up by WSCC Highways. The Goring Gap is safe for another year, but requires constant vigilence.

After the AGM Dr Peter Brandon spoke and showed slides about the propsed South Downs Natiional Park. The project has been mooted ever since the other 16 National Parks were set up back in 1947 but was put on hold because of the intensive agriculture needed because of the then food shortage. The area from Eastbourne to Winchester will be one of the largest Parks, and already receives more visitors than any of the others. It is suggested that once the proposed Board with its several local members is set up, they should concentrate on overall strategy, and delegate planning matters to the 17 local and county councils involved. A lot of funding is promised from central government relieving local councils of substantial expence.

St Mary's Church 26 April 02
On Friday the 26th April a large number of the Parishioners from St Mary's and St Laurence's Churches assembled in St Mary's Church Hall for the Farewell Party for the Reverend Michael Hore and his family. There was a substantial buffet provided by his friends and an excellent farewell speech was given by Miss Jo Holgate, one of the Churchwardens which echoed the thoughts of all those saying goobye. Before the presentations were made a short, but pertinent and enjoyable, sketch was given by members of the Goring Parish Players. Michael Hore gave an entertaining response and he officiated at his last services on Sunday the 28th April with his usual enthusiasm.
The interregnum now begins and it may be some time before a new Vicar is found. It is fortunate that the Parish has a number of excellent Curates who will be able to continue in the meantime.
St Mary's Church will be presenting its first Sunday Afternoon Concert of the season on the 5th May. It will be a recital of music for flute and piano given by Daniel Chandler and Adrian West. Admission is free and the Concert starts at 4.30pm and will last for 45 minutes. Tea and biscuits are available in the Church Hall afterwards and Evensong will be at the usual time of 6pm.
The Choir is having a jig-saw puzzle and cake sale on Saturday the 11th May from 10am until 12 noon in St Mary's Church Hall. Admission, which includes coffee, is 40p. Donations of cakes and jig-saws would be welcome. For further details contact Penelope Corp on Worthing 209448.
All too often we hear of problems and bad behaviour of young people even in Goring so it is a pleasure to report, rather belatedly, that some 30 members of St Mary's Church Youth Group, the ZAP's, took part in an Easter Pilgrimage walking from Eastbourne to Chichester on a walk of witness as a declaration of faith and to share the news of the Resurrection. The walk covered 66 miles in five days and each night the group slept in a different Parish. On the final day they attended a Service with Bishop John at Chichester. It was a superb effort by the walkers (and of course their support teams) over hard and tiring countryside. Not only was it a great experience but it also produced some wonderful examples of perseverance and effort in the face of hardship. Congratulations to them all.
Following the departure of the Vicar the Parish has appointed a new Administrator, Sara Irbens to replace Rosalind Hore. Sara, who is a long term resident of Goring, will be working at the Office Mondays to Fridays between 9am and 12 noon. The telephone number remains the same. Worthing 242525

Goring Residents' Association. - 18 April 02
At the GRA monthly meeting on 21st March, Author and ex Excise Officer Roy Philip spoke on Smuggling in Sussex. Back in 1783 it was really big business and most of the local wealth and industry was dependent on illegal trade. Brandy, Geneva (Gin) and later Tea were the big things. Tea was heavily taxed and therefore could be sold at a big profit. There was also smuggling out of the country at the time when England was the world's greatest producer of wool. The AGM of the Association is on Thursday 18th April at 7.30pm in St Mary's Hall. This will be followed by Songs and Monologues by 'Double Measure' - Mr and Mrs Marett.
