The parish poor houses were paid for by a special rate on property owners and were sometimes quite a good solution. If not actually moving into the poor house you could sometimes get a grant 'on the parish'. But this all changed as the number of the poor grew, and Union Work Houses were set up to bring together all the poor in large prison-like buildings. Serving Goring, the Poor House was at East Preston, and the whole thing gave the area such a bad name that residents in East Preston started to say they lived at Angmering-on-Sea; a habit that continues to this day. The building which was pulled down in 1967 was still in use until 1960. Before the presentation there was discussion of issues of concern to Goring, including the proposed deveopment at Sea Place/Eirene Road, the plans for ASDA at South Durrington, and the parking problems in roads surrounding the Inland Revenue offices. The next meeting of the Association will be the AGM, followed by a talk on the work of the Salvation Army on Thursday 15 April at 7.30 in Sta Mary's Hall, Goring. |
|
Before the main speaker, as is usual, residents had an opportunity to air their concerns. Objection letters to the spoilation of Titnore Lane for the West Durrington development were discussed and signed. Concern continues about the sea front cycle path, and a new development at Sea Place Goring which could end up with blocks of featureless flats facing the sea at the Yacht Club unless we speak very strongly for a more sympathetic development. The next meeting is at 7.30 on Thursday 18 March when Kim Leslie will talk to the intriging title 'In and Out of the Workhouse' |

He stressed the difficulties in protecting our environment, and the need for continued vigilence for the greensward, Ilex Avenue, Highdown, Titnore Woods and Castle Goring. He highlighted the problems that could arise from the proposed cycle path along the Goring sea wall. And the challenge of recurring visits by travellers who despite the recent more aggressive posture by the police and the council, still find a way to stay for several days before thay can be moved on by magistrate's order. As a theatre group of 40 during the war, they were required to do a certain number of performances for the troops. Their group went to Italy, to India, then to the Far East. Best was the Opera House at Bari in Italy where there was a huge stage and plush seating. But there were aircraft hangers and leaky sheds, and sometimes very primitive food and accommodation. If all else failed they stoked up on dry biscuits and treacle. One of the ships near them in a convoy was sunk. Nell said it was an experience she never would have missed. The shows were very well received. And being one of the few girls among thousands of troops made them very popular. Before the talk, Councillor Peter Welch answered questions from the 70 Goring residents. The parking of cars by workers at the Inland Revenue near Durrington Station remains a major problem to which there is no easy solution. The foxes are still causing problems in the Alinora Drive area. But on several topics we can only watch this space - ASDA, West Durrington, South Downs National Park, Cycle Paths, Shoreham Airport are all things to keep an eye on. The price of freedom is eternal vigilence. Next event for the GRA is Christmas Lunch at West Worthing Club on 11th December, the 16th event is now fully booked. And the New Year Party at St Mary's Hall. Details: 01903-245110. |

More than 30 guests attended the October event, all enjoying a relaxed networking evening and delicious dinner. The guest speaker was Ranjit Bajjon from Benedict Mackenzie who held the most interesting and informative discussion on "The Recovery Culture" in relation to the Enterprise Act 2002, over coffee. Cath Hayes, Producer and Promotions Manager for Splash FM commented 'A beautiful venue, with warm and friendly staff and lovely food. A wonderful opportunity for local businesses to make other business contacts' All local business people are invited to attend and the group will be particularly pleased to welcome those who are just starting out in business or are new to networking in Worthing. The aim of the evening is to promote regular informal contact between local businesses in a relaxed and informal environment. Everyone will get an opportunity to take 30 seconds to promote their business before sitting down to enjoy a special menu created by Karen and Enrico at La Sirena. This month's guest speaker is Bob Smytherman, the Tourist and Economic Councillor for this area. For those attending the evening meetings there is no membership fee or annual subscription - individuals are asked only to cover the cost of their dinner and any drinks they require can be purchased at the bar. In the open forum session, always held at these meetings, no less than 50 objection letters were signed against the whole concept of development at West Durrington, but hoping that if it does indeed go ahead at least Titnore Woods and Castle Goring will be protected. Other points covered the travellers, the cycle path near Beach House, and the dilapidated state of one or two of the beach huts. The next meeting is on Thursday November 20 at 7.30pm untitled Travels with ENSA by Miss N Perkin at St Mary's Hall, Goring |
