Goring Residents' Association - 17 Mar 2004
The Goring Residents' Association monthly meeting at St Mary's Hall on Thursday 17 March saw slides from the County Records Office in Chichester. Presented by Kim Leslie the detailed records showed vividly the intense problems in being poor in the early 1800's and how the choices were only three: to steal and be transported to Tasmania when inevitably you were caught; to emigrate with help from the parish or the local squire; or to enter the poor house.

The parish poor houses were paid for by a special rate on property owners and were sometimes quite a good solution. If not actually moving into the poor house you could sometimes get a grant 'on the parish'.

But this all changed as the number of the poor grew, and Union Work Houses were set up to bring together all the poor in large prison-like buildings. Serving Goring, the Poor House was at East Preston, and the whole thing gave the area such a bad name that residents in East Preston started to say they lived at Angmering-on-Sea; a habit that continues to this day. The building which was pulled down in 1967 was still in use until 1960.

Before the presentation there was discussion of issues of concern to Goring, including the proposed deveopment at Sea Place/Eirene Road, the plans for ASDA at South Durrington, and the parking problems in roads surrounding the Inland Revenue offices.

The next meeting of the Association will be the AGM, followed by a talk on the work of the Salvation Army on Thursday 15 April at 7.30 in Sta Mary's Hall, Goring.

Goring Residents' Association - 19 Feb 2004
Goring Residents' Association restarted their winter series of evening meetings after the Christmas break on Thursday. Despite the bitter cold wind outside, 70 residents heard Brian Sanders, teacher, actor and broadcaster talk about his career with BBC radio. As you would expect his personality came over strongly with true actor's diction and presentation. He described the care that is taken, even on radio, to see that the background sound was appropriate to the place where the words would be spoken, and the sound effects that are necessary to support the plot.

Before the main speaker, as is usual, residents had an opportunity to air their concerns. Objection letters to the spoilation of Titnore Lane for the West Durrington development were discussed and signed. Concern continues about the sea front cycle path, and a new development at Sea Place Goring which could end up with blocks of featureless flats facing the sea at the Yacht Club unless we speak very strongly for a more sympathetic development.

The next meeting is at 7.30 on Thursday 18 March when Kim Leslie will talk to the intriging title 'In and Out of the Workhouse'

Probus lunch at West Worthing Club - 19 Nov 2003
Dick Waller was the guest speaker at Probus monthly lunch at the West Worthing Club on 19 November. He spoke of life in Goring with its 15,684 residents, in 6934 households, 2403 children, 7028 cars, and their 2250 dogs. The wealth of activity in 67 community and social groups, 74 sports groups, and no less than 21 eateries and drinkeries.

He stressed the difficulties in protecting our environment, and the need for continued vigilence for the greensward, Ilex Avenue, Highdown, Titnore Woods and Castle Goring. He highlighted the problems that could arise from the proposed cycle path along the Goring sea wall. And the challenge of recurring visits by travellers who despite the recent more aggressive posture by the police and the council, still find a way to stay for several days before thay can be moved on by magistrate's order.

Goring Residents' Association meeting - 20 Nov 2003
Goring Residents' Association meeting on Thursday 20 November heard one-time ballet dancer with ENSA Nell Perkin tell of worldwide travels and many adventures entertaining the troops. ENSA was always called Every Night Something Awful, but its real meaning was Entertainment National Service Association.

As a theatre group of 40 during the war, they were required to do a certain number of performances for the troops. Their group went to Italy, to India, then to the Far East. Best was the Opera House at Bari in Italy where there was a huge stage and plush seating. But there were aircraft hangers and leaky sheds, and sometimes very primitive food and accommodation. If all else failed they stoked up on dry biscuits and treacle. One of the ships near them in a convoy was sunk.

Nell said it was an experience she never would have missed. The shows were very well received. And being one of the few girls among thousands of troops made them very popular.

Before the talk, Councillor Peter Welch answered questions from the 70 Goring residents. The parking of cars by workers at the Inland Revenue near Durrington Station remains a major problem to which there is no easy solution. The foxes are still causing problems in the Alinora Drive area. But on several topics we can only watch this space - ASDA, West Durrington, South Downs National Park, Cycle Paths, Shoreham Airport are all things to keep an eye on. The price of freedom is eternal vigilence.

Next event for the GRA is Christmas Lunch at West Worthing Club on 11th December, the 16th event is now fully booked. And the New Year Party at St Mary's Hall. Details: 01903-245110.

Goring Residents' Association - 17 Oct 2003
The November meeting of the Goring Residents' Association heard ex-naval man Chalky White describe no less than five Britsh warships with associations with Worthing. Some changed their names more than once, but are best known as HMSs Worthing, Bagshot, Wessex, Broadwater, and Brigadeer. But the first HMS Worthing was in fact adopted by Bridport in Dorset. All the ships did well in war service and were a credit to the large amounts contributed by residents to War Weapon's Weeks held each year.

In the open forum session, always held at these meetings, no less than 50 objection letters were signed against the whole concept of development at West Durrington, but hoping that if it does indeed go ahead at least Titnore Woods and Castle Goring will be protected. Other points covered the travellers, the cycle path near Beach House, and the dilapidated state of one or two of the beach huts.

The next meeting is on Thursday November 20 at 7.30pm untitled Travels with ENSA by Miss N Perkin at St Mary's Hall, Goring

The Choir of the Black Sea Don Cossacks - 1 Aug 2003
On Friday last we joined about a hundred others so see and hear an amazing performance given by a group of seven members of this choir. The harmony and projection of their voices was superb and they filled the Church with sounds probably never heard before in the Parish of St Mary. Each member was an accomplished soloist and the bass voices sent tingles down the spine. The first half was of Religious music and the second Russian Folk music. Apparently we were chosen as a trial venue prior to a further visit to the Country next year There was no doubt as to the audience reaction - two standing ovations proved their popularity and the Choir still had to beg to leave even after their two encores! It was an exhausting but wonderful experience. I sincerely hope we shall see them again.

Rainbow Theatre - 26 July 2003
Last Sunday was the final performance of the second Shakespeare plays held in Highdown Gardens. The first was Twelfth Night followed by the Merry Wives of Windsor.
We had booked for the Saturday performance and as we were driving there with our friends and a picnic rain started to spatter on the windscreen. By seven o'clock it was coming down heavily but still the people were coming in. The Producer, Nick Young, was pacing up and down and members of the cast were chatting with members of the audience as to the prognosis. It is a long time since I have been out in such heavy rain and eventually Nick decided to abandon the performance.
The first one in the two performances, So we went again on the Sunday and were blessed with fair weather. Both performances were captivating, even to those who are not ardent Shakespeare fans. The members of the cast performed with confidence and enthusiasm which passed on to the audience. Two most enjoyable events in a lovely setting. We look forward to next year.
