Good things about living in Goring
- The beach and the sea
- The greensward along the front, for kites, ball games and barbecues
- Goring Gap, one very few places where the farm land comes down to the sea
- Ilex Avenue, a unique asset for nearly a mile between Goring and Ferring
- Highdown Gardens which flies a Green Flag recognising its beauty
- Highdown Saxon Fort, and the Millers Tomb
- Titnore Woods, ancient oaks in beautiful parkland
- Castle Goring, our Grade I listed building
- The South Downs
- fresh air, peace, quiet, easier driving, at least compared with living nearer London
- friendly people, good shops, schools, hospitals and services
- maintenence of a clean and tidy environment by the county and borough councils
- and in Worthing
- the Promenade and the pier
- Flowers in the parks and gardens
- Museum and art gallery
- The Connaught, Pavilion, Dome, and Assembly Hall
The Big Picture.
We need a Master Plan for the creation of a town which
residents will be proud of and which people will want to visit. Current
actions are only piecemeal.
- By-pass for Worthing and removing bottlenecks at Arundel and Chichester
- East Worthing Access Road
- Teville Gate rebuild
- Sports Centre refurb
- The Aquarena rebuild or refurbishment
- Castle Goring which urgently needs repairs
- Guildbourne Centre lacks customer appeal
- Traffic jams and lack of parking in Worthing town centre
- Ugly Carparks and more capacity.
- Facades of buildings which are ugly between the sea end of South Street and
the Dome Cinema.
- The Lido improvement (now looking better)
We highlight the major worries we have in Goring:
- Threat of Housing at West Durrington and the threat of encroaching onto Titnore Woods and Castle Goring
- Threat of ASDA Superstore and the increased traffic at Bolsover Road
- Threat of Eirene Road for the proposed high density housing in a low density area.
- Threat of a cycle track from Sea Place to Ferring along the sea wall, when there is a South Coast Cycle Route already in place
- Threat to heritage buildings in Worthing which are in danger of being pulled down for development
30 Things which could be done immediately
- Parking at Inland Revenue continued problems with cars parked in the roads around.
- Jetskis to do something about the noise. We note that some of them have silencers, but only very few.
Now that kite-surfers are travelling as fast as jetskis, perhaps it is time to impose some rules on where they can operate too.
- The cycle track along the sea wall sorted and out of the way (WBC*)
Proposed cycle path on Goring Seawall
- Litter. 1. The shopping areas are well done. Could the council litter pickers please look also to the carparks and open areas more often. (WBC*) Could we all pick up litter in our own areas, and certainly refrain from dropping it.
2. On very sunny weekends there used to be an arrangement that the litter bins along the front were emptied during the day as well as in the morning. Could we have this service back please.
- Travellers who may wish to occupy roads in the Goring Gap, car parks, and playing fields (WBC*)
Travellers in the Goring Gap
We note the new style co-operation between WBC and the police to protect key areas.
- Graffiti (WBC*)
- Vandalism a general problem, but also the number of broken beer bottles on the greensward.
- Fly Posting people who put up signs advertising events or people's birthdays and do not take them down after the event.
- Sea Lane Pump House Southern Water to finish the job by painting the scars after fitting new windows
- Uneven Pavements in several roads (WBC* or WSCC)
- Tarmac pavements an ugly solution instead of paving.
- Potholes forming in the A259 Goring Road between Parklands and Alinora Avenue.
- Gents loo behind the Goring library overdue for a refurb
- Hedges that overgrow the footpath (WBC* and the owners)
- Boys on Bikes digging holes in the Plantation
- Sea Defences - there are now some areas where repairs to the breakwaters are required (WBC)
We note that work has been done at Ferring
Coastal Erosion
- Mini-roundabout needed at junction A259 and The Strand (WSCC)
- Mini-roundabout at junction George V Avenue and Eirene Road needs improved sightlines on the corners (WBC)
- Cycling on the Footpaths and the abuse when we try and stop it.
- Golfers on the Greensward and on the playing fields, causing stray drives to hit local houses.
- Beach Hut Painting more assertive sanctions on the lessees of the several which need of painting or roof repairs (WBC)
Beach Huts
- Grass Verges and Roundabouts should be cut when needed and not just the contracted seven times per year. (WSCC) Could neighbours see their way to cutting their own verges?
- Horses Galloping down the Ilex Avenue to the danger of children.
- Horses on the greensward please not to come onto the greensward as it puts hoof marks into the grass.
- Vehicles on the greensward could contractors please not drive on the grass of the greensward
- Parking on the verge could the owners of commercial vans not park overnight in residential roads. Please could they park in their private drive or away in their works yard.
- parking on the pavement, or with two wheels on the verge, which cracks the paving slabs or ruins the grass
- Dog Mess owners please always clean up after their dogs (which about 5% of owners do not)
- Speed Limit in the Goring Gap and along the western part of Marine Drive
- Reduce Speed generally and on Sea Lane and Alinora Avenue
There are in addition a number of more difficult things that should be
addressed:
- the fear of burglars, which is more insidious even than the far-too-many actual burglaries
- poor service in the health care system (having to wait three hours or more in casualty is not good)
- Holdups on the main roads after any sort of accident the Police tend to close the road for hours while they fiddle about deciding who was to blame
Countryside policy things:
To maintain the beauty and present character of key areas round Goring:
- Goring Gap, both at the sea end, and up to the A259
- The greensward Sea Place to Ferring
- Titnore Lane and Titnore woods
- Castle Goring (which urgently needs repairs)
- The whole West Durrington development area
- Support for the proposed South Downs National Park
For England as whole
- Poor service in the health care system. Having to wait three hours or more in casualty is not good, and postponing operations is very bad. A lot of the damage is caused by targets at the expense of medical priority.
- Holdups on the main roads after any sort of accident the Police tend to
close the road for hours while they fiddle about deciding who was to blame
- Complexity imposed on business and professionals by government including
Health and Safety requirements. And the growing fear of litigation.
- Two many forums, think-tanks, focus groups and not enough action
- EU Constitution do you understand it all?
- The Euro is it in our best interests?
- Transport, Hospitals, Education how could they do better
- Pensions realistic options for a bankrupt system
- Benefits - reduced dependence
- Immigration
- Level of Taxation
- Identity Cards are a bad and very expensive idea
Contributions to these lists are earnestly invited
